Freedom isn't free

Image by Ginger Dupre at the Cumberland Island waterfront July 5th

The 4th of July has such special meaning to my family and I. My father served, my husband served, my father-in-law served, my oldest son wants to serve, I have friends who have served and who are currently serving....

Today I woke up in my warm comfortable bed, brushed my teeth, ate breakfast, ran a few errands, spent time with my family, surfed the Internet, Twittered, enjoyed a climate controlled day indoors, felt little to no fear, laughed, etc. I thought little of any of these comforts, sources of joy, abilities.

This evening, I was looking over my blog roll and stumbled upon a site called AnySoldier.com. It is a wonderful service for the troops that helps organize their needs so people like you and I can send them some hope, encouragement, and necessities from home. It didn't take long before I was engulfed in the pages and pages of stories. Oh the many things I take for granted.

On this 4th of July, please make an extra special place in your thoughts and in your heart for our troops. They sacrifice so much for us. We have no true comprehension of just how much. The many things we think nothing about, they savor and cherish every second of. They give of themselves selflessly and tirelessly so we can walk around and enjoy all of our freedoms. Words cannot express the gratitude and respect I have for the men and women serving at home and abroad. They are amazing and they should know they have the support of those of us here who have previously served or are not serving.

Please consider going to Any Soldier to find troops in need and send them a care package. Let them know they mean so much to us and that we are here thinking of them, praying for them, and awaiting their safe return. It would mean so much to them just to receive a few comforts from home and to know we care. I am sure their stories will touch you as much as they have touched me tonight.
